My Story

Multicultural competency and cultural sensitivity are at the forefront of all Mary does. The role of intersectionality in treatment cannot be ignored. Every person holds a unique identity, and they have the right to be respected and honored for who they are. Individuals come from different backgrounds and have varying viewpoints regarding counseling and mental health.  Mary makes it her responsibility to ensure she is up to date on current events, and educated on the issues of race, class, culture, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

Mary uses empathy and unconditional positive regard to be present with her clients and provide them with the services they need. For every client, Mary will create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to their success. This plan will be changed and updated as needed.

Mary recognizes fully that there is no ideal client.  So much of the theoretical framework commonly used for treatment caters to this notion of an ideal client. Every client will respond to treatment differently.  As a counselor, it is her responsibility to adjust her theoretical approach and integrate approaches to suit the client's goals for treatment. If needed, Mary will spend extra time conducting research and seeking supervision to find an evidenced-based approach which will best suit her client.

Mary believes that the counseling office is a sacred space where people can share their innermost thoughts and be truly vulnerable. She treats the role of the client with the utmost respect, and she will do all in my power to assist those who seek help. Mary tailors each of her session plans to suit the unique needs of each client and understands that counseling sessions are dynamic. Plans are all well and good, but you must also be able to be present and in the moment with clients and adapt to changes.
